Facts about Penis size

Facts about Penis size

Men have been known to have problems with erectile dysfunction after someone made a remark about their penis size. But almost all of these men had a perfectly normal male organ. Each one just thought he was very small compared with other men.

Average penis length:

Flaccid:

A flaccid penis usually measures between 8.5cm - 10.5cm (3-4 inches) from base to tip. The average figure is about 9.5cm (3.75 inches).

Obviously, some men have a large penis and some have smaller ones, just as some men have small hands and some have big, but the measurement is no index of virility.

It’s worth noting that you can’t really predict erection size from a flaccid penis. A man whose non-erect penis is on the small side will usually achieve about a 100 per cent increase in length during sexual excitement. While, a man whose non-erect penis is on the largish size will probably manage about a 75 per cent increase, meaning the difference between the two will not be all that great.

Erect:

So what size is the average erection? It’s a question that is often answered with a heavy dose of exaggeration and misinformation. Fortunately, a group of experts have done their best to reach an accurate answer. In a review in the British Journal of Urology International, they compared results from 50 international projects to record the average erect penis to be between 5.5in and 6.2in long. The average girth is 4.7 to 5.1.

A penis would only be considered unusually small if it was less than 3 inches (7.6cm) in length when erect.

Penis size and women

Almost every man forgets that it does not matter how long or how short your penis is, because the vagina will accommodate itself to any length.

The vagina of a woman who has not had a child is only 7.5cm (3 inches) long when she's not sexually excited.

Even when aroused, a woman's vagina usually extends only to a length of about 10cm (4 inches). Meaning most men's penis will fill her vagina completely.

You may now be wondering how the average man with an erection of six inches manages to insert his penis into the vagina at all.

The vagina has the most remarkable capacity for lengthening. So a man whose erect penis is eight inches long can still make love to any woman, as long as he excites her properly and introduces his organ very slowly. In doing this, her vagina can lengthen by 150 or 200% to accommodate him.

Interestingly, in the review on penis size reported in the British Journal of Urology International, while only 55% of men were satisfied with the size of their own penis, 85% of women said they had no problem with the size of their partner’s penis.

What treatments are there to increase penis size?

Before pursing any treatment it is worth considering whether this is something you need to be doing. Many men underestimate the size of their penis or else overestimate the size of the average penis. Companies exploit this anxiety by promising all kinds of enhancements to increase length and girth. Unfortunately, few if any of the methods below, will result in a bigger erection.

Pills and lotions

You’ll probably see a variety of pills and lotions advertised that supposedly enlarge your penis. These usually contain vitamins, herbal remedies, hormones or minerals but there is no clinical evidence that they make the blindest bit of difference.

Penis suction devices

These involve placing a tube over the penis and pumping air to create a vacuum to draw blood into the penis to make it swell. These devices are sometimes useful for the short-term treatment for men who struggle to get or maintain an erection but there is very little evidence that they increase penis size.

Penis extender devices

Penis extender devices involve placing a weight or traction device (a sort of frame) onto the flaccid penis to stretch it out. There is no evidence that using a weight will make you larger and more importantly it could actually cause permanent damage to the penis. There is some evidence that traction devices can help men who are small in size - some have reported a gain of 1-2cm after using traction devices for six months. These treatments should only be started with the supervision of a doctor.

Penis enlargement exercises

These involve a pulling exercise - whereby you repeatedly pull the flaccid penis using the thumb and index finger with the intention of increasing the blood capacity of the penis’s erectile tissue resulting in improved length and girth. Unfortunately, there is no scientific evidence that this actually works.

Surgery

Various techniques are available to increase both penis length and girth. Girth surgery sometimes involves taking fat from another part of the body and injecting this into the penis. However, studies have shown the results to be disappointing. There is also a risk of disfigurement, scarring and infection. A newer method involves placing a biodegradable frame filled with tissue cells around the shaft of the penis.

Penis length surgery entails cutting the ligament that attaches the penis to the pubic bone and performing a skin grafted at the base of the penis to add extra length. An extra 2cm can be gained but this is only to the flaccid penis. The procedure will have no impact on erection length and will also prevent the penis from pointing as high which may make sex less comfortable.
