What is Advocate for Dogs?

Fleas, lice, ear mites, heartworm (which can be picked up from consuming slugs and snails, the larvae of which contain the parasite), woodworm: all are painful and irritating infections which can blight your pet’s health and well- being.

Advocate is a topical treatment- this means that it is applied directly to the skin, rather than being ingested as a pill, and treats and prevents all of these nasty infections. Doses are contained within pipettes, which you simply screw the lid off and apply to your dog.

As well as being an awful experience for your dog, roundworms and hookworms can also be caught by humans- making it something to be extra- vigilant about warding off.

You can begin using Advocate for adult dogs when your dog is seven weeks old, and the Advocate puppy formula before then. Make sure you ask your vet whether Advocate is an appropriate treatment to use if your dog is sick or ill in any other way.

Why Use Advocate?

As Advocate is applied to your dog’s skin, rather than as a pill, it means that any dogs who have food allergies will not suffer the potential adverse effects of other parasite treatment brands. It also means you don't have to worry if your dog is a fussy eater.

Does it matter if my dog consumes Advocate accidentally?

The formula has a bitter taste, so it is a good idea to try and stop your dog from licking the site at which it has been applied. Similarly, do not let dogs who have just had the treatment applied groom one another, as might lead to them consuming the product.

Are there any breeds I shouldn’t use Advocate on?

Advocate contains moxidectin (a macrocyclic lactone), a substance to which Collies and Old English Sheepdogs are sensitive. If too much Advocate is consumed orally by these breeds, they may suffer from a seizure.

Can I use Advocate on pregnant or lactating female dogs?

Yes, Advocate is safe to use in both of these instances.

Can I use Advocate in conjunction with other antiparasitics?

You should not use Advocate with any other antiparasitic macrocyclic lactone.

How quickly will Advocate kill fleas?

One application beats fleas for one month, although existing pupae may continue to emerge for up to six weeks after your first apply the treatment, depending on the conditions in which your dog lives. As such, it is important to combine Advocate treatment with other ways to break the flea life cycle.

If I want to prevent heartworm in my dog, when should I begin applying Advocate?

If heartworm is your dog’s issue, again Advocate must be applied every four weeks when mosquitos are present to be effective and to keep the parasite away. This is because mosquitos carry and transmit heartworm larvae. As such, it is best to be prepared and to pre-empt the problem a month before the weather starts to get warmer.

How often should I apply Advocate to ward off all parasites?

For maximum effectiveness against all parasites, establish a routine of applying Advocate. Select a day in the month when you apply Advocate to your dog.
