Chlamydia or Chlamydia trachomatis is a sexually transmitted bacteria. In women the infection can spread to the womb, ovaries or the fallopian tubes and can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease which ultimately can lead to infertility. In men Chlamydia infects the urethra which is the tube through which urine is passed and in some cases can lead to infertility.

How common is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is the most common STI in the UK with 1 in 20 sexually active people testing positive for the infection. 75% of women and 50% of men who are infected will show no symptoms but Chlamydia can have long term affects such as infertility.

What are the symptoms of Chlamydia?

If symptoms do occur in men, they can include pain or burning on urination, a cloudy discharge from the tip of the penis or from the anus, or general pain and discomfort of the penis. In women symptoms can include vaginal or anal discharge, pain or burning when passing urine, vaginal bleeding in between periods, particularly after sex, and abdominal/pelvic pain or discomfort which can be exacerbated after sex.
