Pepto-Bismol, also known as "Pink Bismuth" or "The Pink Stuff", is a popular antacid medication that is used to treat stomach conditions such as diarrhoea, indigestion, heartburn and nausea.
Believe it or not, the story of Pepto-Bismol's begins over a hundred years ago. While it uses bismuth salts which were used throughout Europe in the late 18th century, the discovery of combining them with zinc salts to create an astringency with salol came about in the early 20th century. This was originally used as a remedy for life-threatening diarrhoea for young children with cholera.
Since its beginnings, Pepto-Bismol has become one of the world's leading remedies for temporary stomach conditions. Due to its distinct pink colouring and marketing, over the years Pepto-Bismol is recognised worldwide.
Whether you choose the Pepto-Bismol Chewable Tablets or liquid solution, they contain Bismuth Subsalicylate. It coats any irritated tissue in the stomach, protecting them from stomach acid while killing certain bacteria like E-coli. This a very common cause of diarrhoea.
Pepto-Bismol is also shown to have the properties of a mild antacid.
