Regaine for Hair Loss in Men and Women

Regaine, called Rogaine in the US, is an over-the-counter hair regrowth treatment. It is clinically proven to reduce hereditary hair loss and to help hair to regrow by reactivating inactive hair follicles. Regaine products are available both for men and women.

How does Regaine work?

Regaine contains the active ingredient Minoxidil which works by increasing the supply of blood and nutrients to the hair follicles, strengthening existing hair and stimulating secondary growth. This produces thicker, longer, more-visible hair.

Minoxidil, the active ingredient in Regaine, reinvigorates shrunken hair follicles - they increase in size and regrow thicker hair over time.

Regaine works by stimulating hair follicle growth. Regaine Foam and Solution contain the active ingredient Minoxidil, the only over-the-counter treatment clinically proven to help prevent further hair loss.

Minoxidil works by helping the blood flow to the hair follicles and increasing follicular size and hair shaft diameter, stimulating and prolonging hair growth. It has been shown to help prevent further hair loss in 4 out of 5 men and help stimulate regrowth for a thicker, fuller head of hair.

  • 90% of men using Men Extra Strength Scalp Foam twice a day saw a positive result after using the product for 16 weeks.

Regaine for men

Regaine offers products for men suffering from hereditary loss.

What is hereditary hair loss in men?

The full name for hereditary hair loss or male pattern baldness is Androgenetic Alopecia. This isn't the only reason men lose hair, but it is the most common, accounting for 95% of all hair loss. Causes for the other 5% include stress, bad diet or medical disorders.

Androgenetic Alopecia is easy to identify because it has a classic set of symptoms. First, the hairline starts to recede at the brow and temples. Then the hair becomes thinner and lighter on the crown, while the sides and backstay are pretty much the same.

Of course, you can also look at other members of your family to see if your hair is following a similar pattern to theirs. But remember that age and testosterone are also believed to be factors in the onset of hereditary hair loss, so don't go blanking your old man just yet. The good news is that if it's hereditary, it's treatable, and the Regaine products below might help you with your hair loss.

Regaine Foam for Men

Regaine Foam for Men is a hair regrowth treatment to massage the scalp.

How to apply Regaine Foam for Men

To get the best results out of Regaine Foam, you should use it twice a day. While that may seem like a challenging task for you if you are always on the go, it can be easy to fit the application of Regaine if you follow these simple steps when you wake up in the morning and before you go to bed.

  • Regaine extra strength foam should only be applied on a dry scalp and hair.
  • Wash your hands both before and after the application.
  • Part your hair to expose the scalp.
  • Hold the can straight down and press the nozzle to dispense half a capful onto your fingers. Do not use more than this for each application.
  • Apply the foam to your scalp and gently massage, taking care to massage the hair loss area.
  • Wash your hands after using the foam.
  • Allow the foam to dry completely before styling your hair with gel or mousse and before going to bed.

Even though you are applying Regaine Foam twice a day, it may take at least two months to see regrowth. Be sure you stick with the twice-a-day routine.

Should you forget one day, don’t try to cram in all the lost application sessions. Instead, start again where you left off and this time tries to maintain the twice-a-day routine.

If you do not see any improvement in the growth of your hair after 16 weeks of using Regaine foam, stop using it.

Regaine Foam for Men reviews

“I have been using this product for over a year and have found it effective in stopping hair loss. Hair is regrowing but at a slow rate, I believe the key to success is to maintain a good routine of application, basically every 12 hours.” - Patrick

“I cannot recommend this product enough, so easy to use twice a day it becomes second nature and with results seeing new hair regrowth, it’s amazing. I have been using Regaine for 11 months now.” - Ian Carter

“I noticed my hair was getting really thin on top. I’m 31. I saw this and I thought I’d give it a try. After a few months, it does make it less noticeable and I can definitely see more hair. I doubt it will completely cover the thin spot but I’m happy with the result so I will continue using it. Probably doesn't work on everyone but I would recommend giving it a try if you are conscious about your hair.” - Good Hair Day

How to apply Regaine Solution for Men

To apply Regaine solution you can follow these steps:

  • Wash your hands before applying Regaine solution.
  • Apply Regaine extra strength solution to dry/towel dry hair and scalp.
  • Apply 1 ml of the Regaine solution twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening 30 minutes before bed.
  • Massage the solution gently into your scalp, taking care to massage the affected areas more.
  • Between applications, there should be a 12-hour gap.
  • If you need to apply the solution to a larger scalp area, use the pump spray applicator. Aim the pump at the centre of the bald area and press once. Spread the solution with your fingertips and cover the entire bald area. Repeat 6 times to get the complete 1 ml dose and avoid inhaling the spray mist.
  • If you need to apply the solution to small areas of the scalp, use the rub-on applicator. You can measure a proper 1 ml dose by squeezing the upright bottle to fill the 1 ml chamber to the black line. Next, hold the bottle upside down and rub the applicator onto the bald area till the chamber is empty.

Do not use more than 1 ml for each application and do not use the solution more than twice a day. Keep in mind also that it may take time to see results. It’s important to stick with a twice-a-day routine if you wish to see results. However, if there is no improvement after 1 year of using Regaine solution you should stop using it.

Regaine Solution for Men reviews

“I started using it about five years ago as I was receding in front and losing it on top. I have to say that I was sceptical since I’d tried other products which had not worked. It started working very quickly in stemming the loss, then hair started growing back. My hair now is almost as thick as before I started losing it. Excellent product.” - Aitchian

“Hereditary hair loss has always been a problem to the male side of our family so twenty years ago I started using Minoxidil to prevent this. I am pleased to say it appears to be working and will continue to use it.”- Shepperton

“Fantastic product. I have been using this product for the past 6 months and my hair has started to grow back and thicken. I can hardly believe it. Over the moon. I’m hoping at the rate of hair growth in a two-year period of constant use, my hair should have returned. I know it sounds like a long time. But I’ve been bald for 14 years, so I don’t care how long it takes to fully come back. It is on its way. Can’t thank Regaine enough, I feel a much more confident person.”- Constantine

Regaine for women

Regaine offers products for women suffering from hereditary hair loss.

Hair loss in women

One of the most common causes of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia (AGA), also known as male pattern baldness. A woman's age, hormones, and hereditary genes all play a part in this. Nearly 95% of all hair loss problems are because of androgenetic alopecia.

AGA is usually triggered by a combination of hormonal activity and hereditary, which causes the hair follicles on your head to shrink and the growth cycle of the hair to shorten. When this happens your hair becomes noticeably thinner and shorter.

Soon the growth stops completely leading to baldness. The good news is that hereditary hair loss is treatable and that the Regaine products below might help.

Regaine Solution for Women reviews

“I have been using Regaine for a number of years now. I started using it because I had a proper landing strip on my head, very distressing. After about 6 months the gap was gradually filled again - first with downy hair, but after continuous use, nobody notices any problem anymore. I keep asking my hairdresser each time I go, if she notices any hair loss on top of my head and she has reassured me each time, that all looks fine now, I'll keep using Regaine until I am 65, definitely.” - Anna

“I have used this product for nearly a year and it definitely works. I have seen new hair growth appear and my hairdresser has commented on how my hair is thicker. I am 60 so it can work for us more mature women.” - Brooks

“I started using Regaine after a recommendation from a consultant dermatologist a number of years ago on the understanding that it is a commitment. (Any hair you gain will be lost if you stop using Regaine.) I have no complaints, it does work.” - Angela

Regaine FAQs

How long does it take before Regaine starts to work?

This will vary. Clinical studies have shown that regrowth can occur as early as 8 weeks when using Regaine Extra Strength Foam or Solution. But it can take up to 16 weeks to see results. Just bear in mind, that results will vary from person to person, so you just need to be patient.

When you start using Regaine, you may notice a temporary increase in hair loss in the first 2-6 weeks. This is entirely normal and is actually good news - it shows that your hair is shifting from a dormant phase to an active growing phase.

If I use Regaine more often will it work faster?

No. Your hair won't grow any faster or better if you apply it more than twice a day and you increase the risk of side effects.

How long should I keep using Regaine?

You should keep using Regaine for as long as you want to maintain the effect. If you stop using the product, you will lose the hair that grew back and will most likely revert to the previous pattern of hair loss.

What happens if I stop using Regaine?

If treatment is stopped, you will not only lose the hair that grew back, but you will most likely revert to your previous pattern of hair loss. But if you stop using Regaine you won't be worse off than before.

Will Regaine make my scalp more sensitive to the sun?

No. If you plan to be in the sun after applying Regaine, we recommend you use headwear. It would also be a good idea to wait until Regaine is completely dry before putting your hat on as the solution can stain the fabric.

Should I use a special shampoo while using Regaine?

It's not essential, but we do recommend using gentle shampoo.

Do I have to wash my hair before applying Regaine and if so, how long should I wait afterwards before applying it?

You don't have to shampoo before applying Regaine but if you do, make sure your scalp is dehydrated before applying it. This is simply to ensure that Regaine won't be diluted or evaporated before it has been fully absorbed.

Can I continue my normal hair care routine, using conditioners, wax, etc. while using Regaine?

You should continue your hair care routine as normal but choose your haircare products carefully. Gentle shampoos and conditioners suitable to your hair type are best and always rinse them out thoroughly. If using any sprays, gels, wax or mousse, make sure the Regaine you are using has completely dried.

Can I use a hair dryer while using Regaine?

You can use a hair dryer after shampooing, but Regaine should be allowed to dry naturally. If you use it to dry the medication the heat will cause it to evaporate before being absorbed into the scalp.

How can I help to prevent the foam from turning into a liquid?

It is important when dispensing the foam that the can is held vertically straight upside down to avoid the mixture turning into a liquid. If the can is held horizontally, the propellant is released too quickly, resulting in excess Minoxidil liquid at the bottom of the can.

Can I use Regaine on a receding hairline?

Yes, you can use Regaine if your hair is receding as this is typically a sign of the early stages of hereditary hair loss.

Will Regaine work for everybody?

No, there are several factors that may influence the effects of Regaine including:

  • The predominance of hereditary hair loss in your family
  • The length of time you have been losing your hair
  • The specific type of hair loss condition you have
  • The area of hair loss on your scalp

However, Regaine is proven to stabilise hair loss in 4 out of 5 men and over 5 million users worldwide can't be wrong!

How long will a bottle or can of Regaine last?

Based on the recommended dose, approximately 30 days. As you near the end of one bottle or can, make sure you buy your next pack so you don't miss any applications.

What if I accidentally spill some Regaine product on my face?

Don't panic, there is nothing to worry about: just wash it off with lots of cool water straight away.

What should I look for as a sign that Regaine is working?

If Regaine works for you, you should begin to notice that you're losing much less hair. You might even begin to see new hair growth that may be soft, downy and lighter in colour than the rest of your hair. Over time, this hair should thicken and blend in with the rest of your crop.

If I wear a wig while I wait for new hair growth will it affect the results?

It hasn't been determined if this affects the re-growth rate with any Regaine products.

Will Regaine stop my hair from turning grey?

No, we're not miracle workers. Sorry.

Can I use Regaine if I've already had a transplant?

No studies have been conducted to determine the safety and efficacy of Regaine in this case, so no, we don't recommend it.

Will Regaine affect the condition of my hair?

Regaine products can help to strengthen and thicken your existing hair. There's no evidence that it will do any harm but there have been some rare reports of a slight change in colour or texture.

Can I go swimming after using Regaine?

Yes, but you should wait until the treatment is completely dry before taking the plunge. You should not apply an extra dose of Regaine after swimming, just wait until your next application.

Can I have my hair dyed or permed if I'm using Regaine?

Yes. Stick to your normal hair care routine but make sure you tell your hairdresser that you're using Regaine. Let your hairdresser know that any massaging of the scalp should be gentle to minimise hair breakage and that if they use a comb it should have round, widely spaced teeth.
