Omacor Soft Capsule 1000mg are used to help treat quite high triglyceride levels and cholesterol levels. These oral only capsules contain Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters also contain highly purified omega-3 polyunsaturated acids that are used to lower the risks of heart attacks.
Are Omacor capsules suitable for me?
In certain situations, Omacor capsules should be used with caution or may not be recommended at all. This will apply to people who are at a low risk of developing heart problems in the future or whose triglyceride levels are normal, people under 18 or over 70 years of age, women who are pregnant (or likely to become pregnant) or breastfeeding, people with liver problems, and people who are allergic to any of the active or inactive ingredients.
If you are currently taking any other medicines, the online doctor will need to know about them – whether they’re from your doctor or pharmacy-bought. Omacor capsules have been known to cause problems if taken with certain other medicines, including warfarin and other anticoagulants, so we’ll need this information from the outset.
Be sure to provide the doctor with a full picture of your general health in the consultation, so you can be assessed on your individual risk of heart problems in the future, and the safety of statin treatment for you.
Use in children
Children should not take this medicine.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
You should not take this medicine if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, unless your doctor decides it is absolutely necessary.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using any medicine.
Driving and using machines
This medicine is not likely to affect you being able to drive or use any tools or machines.
Important Information about some of the ingredients
Omacor may contain soya-bean oil. If you are allergic to peanut or soya, do not use this medicinal product.
Omacor is usually well tolerated but it may cause some side effects. In the list of possible side effects given below, we give an indication of how likely it is that you will get these side effects: ‘common’ means less than one in ten patients may experience this side effect; ‘uncommon’ means less than one in a hundred; ‘rarely’ means less than one in a thousand; and ‘very rarely’ means less than one in ten thousand patients.
Common – indigestion and nausea
Uncommon – abdominal and stomach pain, allergic reactions, dizziness, taste impairment, diarrhoea and vomiting Rare – headache, acne, itchy rash, raised blood sugar, liver complaints Very rare – blood in your faeces, low blood pressure, dry nose, hives, blood changes. The soft gelatin capsules contain a small quantity of glycerol, which can be harmful in high doses. Glycerol can cause headache and stomach upsets and diarrhoea.Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are concerned, or if you have any other side effects which are not mentioned.
Take the capsules with water. You may take the capsules at meal times to help reduce gastrointestinal side effects. The duration of treatment will be decided by your doctor.
Treatment after a heart attack: The usual dose is one capsule daily. Hypertriglyceridaemia (high blood triglyceride levels): The usual dose is 2 to 4 capsules a day as recommended by a doctor. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose, in which case take the next dose as usual. Do not increase the dose to make up for missed doses.
What Omacor contain
Each capsule contains 1000 mg of omega-3-acid ethyl esters 90% comprising 460 mg eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 380 mg docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ethyl esters (these substances are called omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids) including as antioxidant 4 mg d-alpha- tocopherol (mixed with a vegetable oil e.g. soya-bean oil).
The soft capsule shell is made up of gelatin, glycerol, medium-chain triglycerides, lecithin soya and purified water.
