Metformin belongs to a group of medicines known as biguanides, which are used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes. Metformin works by improving your body’s sensitivity to insulin.
Diabetes is a condition which causes blood sugar levels to become too high. It is a condition which is lifelong. There are approximately 3.9 million people living with diabetes in the UK which equates to 1 in 16. This figure has nearly trebled since 1996 and it is expected to continue rising. Many more people have blood sugar levels which are higher than the normal range but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.
