Metformin belongs to a group of medicines known as biguanides, which are used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes. Metformin works by improving your body’s sensitivity to insulin. Diabetes is a condition which causes blood sugar levels to become too high. It is a condition which is lifelong. There are approximately 3.9 million people living with diabetes in the UK which equates to 1 in 16. This figure has nearly trebled since 1996 and it is expected to continue rising. Many more people have blood sugar levels which are higher than the normal range but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

Metformin is not for children.
Take Metformin with or just after food which will help to lower your chances of getting an upset stomach. Do not chew, swallow whole with water.
The usual starting dose for adults is 1 or 2 500mg tablets or 1 850mg tablet a day which is gradually increased until you find the right dosage for you.
Please note, like all medicine, Metformin can cause side effects – although this does not apply to everyone who has taken them. Side effects are usually temporary with continued treatment or disappear when you stop tacking the medicine.

The active ingredient in Metformin is metformin hydrochloride.
The other ingredients are:
Sodium starch glycollate (Type A), maize starch, povidone K30, colloidal anhydrous silica, magnesium stearate, methylhydroxypropylceellulose, titanium dioxide E 171, propylene glycol E 1520, polyethylene glycol 6000 and purified talc E553 b.
