Skin Care Routines; Cleansing.

Why is cleansing so important?

Cleansing is an important part of all skin care regimes and is necessary for every skin type, including dry. Cleansing is important for women who wear makeup to ensure all traces of makeup are removed. Contrary to belief, makeup does not cause blemishes but failing to remove thoroughly can, so make sure you double cleanse if you wear foundation, powders and other face makeup. Cleansing also helps to remove surface dirt, impurities and excess oils to leave skin clean, fresh and healthy. Not removing these impurities can result in blemishes, black heads and congestion.

Soap should never be used above the neck as it is not gentle enough for the delicate skin on the face. The skin has a pH level that should not be disturbed, and as soaps are slightly alkaline because they are a cleaning agent, this will result in “stripping” the skin of essential nutrients. Always stick to a cleanser suitable for your skin type. If you have dry skin, for example, opt for a creamy cleanser instead of a gel.

What should I use?

If you are unsure what skin type you are, see a skin therapist where they can carry out an in-depth skin analysis and instruct you of how you should be looking after your skin.

If you have dry skin, try Dermalogica Essential Cleansing Solution; a rich, creamy cleaner that

hydrates and soothes dry areas without stripping the skin of essential oils and nutrients. Contains nourishing Safflower oil and well as anti-oxidants.

How should I cleanse?

Use a small amount of your prescribed Dermalogica cleanser, add warm water and gently lather in the hands. Apply to the face and use in gentle, circular movements all over the face and neck. Rinse thoroughly with luke warm water and repeat if necessary, if makeup has been worn etc. Never use hot or cold water on the face as both can cause broken capillaries. Always stick to warm water to open the pores, and luke warm or cool water to help close them following cleansing.

If your skin can be problematic, with excess oil production, shine and breakouts, try Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser. The unique blend of bentonite and kaolin clays act as an astringent to absorb excess oil, refine the pores and clear congestion, while the menthol ingredient helps to cool and soothe.

If your skin is sensitized and reacts easily when exposed to the environment, you should try Dermalogica Ultra Calming Cleanser, a light, gentle cleansing gel fortified with Dermalogica’s exclusive Anti-Ozonate complex to help protect and soothe the skin from further irritation, leaving skin refreshed, revitalised and cared for.
