The active ingredient in Champix is varenicline and it works to help relieve your cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Quitting smoking can be a very challenging process, you may experience physical and psychological symptoms.

Smoking after your quitting date is not advised, however Champix can also reduce your enjoyment of cigarettes during treatment.

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Stopping smoking completely is more probable if you are motivated. Your doctor or pharmacist can provide advice and support to help ensure your attempt to stop is successful.

Before starting Champix, you should typically decide a date of the second week of treatment (between days 8 and 14) when you will stop smoking. Alternatively, you can set your own date to quit.

Champix tablets should be swallowed whole with water.

Please note, like all medicine, Champix tablets can cause side effects although this does not apply to everyone who has taken them. Side effects are usually temporary with continued treatment or disappear when you stop tacking the medicine.

What are the possible side effects?

Whether you are taking medication to stop smoking or not the following are symptoms you may feel: depressed, short-tempered, frustrated or angry, nervous, impatient; have difficulty concentrating. Your appetite may increase, and you may gain some weight.

Like all medicines, Champix can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The common side effects are mostly mild to moderate and these usually occur in the first weeks of treatment.

The most common side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Headache
  • Abnormal dreams (vivid, unusual, or increased dreaming; rarely may include nightmares)
  • Constipation
  • Gas

Tell your doctor immediately if you experience unusual feelings of agitation depressed mood, hostility, changes in behaviour or suicidal thoughts. Stop taking Champix if you experience these symptoms in a way that is not typical for you, or if you have thoughts of self-harm or harm to others.

These symptoms have been reported in patients trying to stop smoking with or without Champix. It is not known if these symptoms are related to Champix.

The active substance is 0.5 mg varenicline and 1 mg varenicline respectively - The other ingredients are:

Tablet core: Cellulose, Microcrystalline Calcium Hydrogen Phosphate Anhydrous Croscarmellose Sodium Silica, Colloidal Anhydrous Magnesium Stearate.>/p>

Tablet coating (0.5mg): Hypromellose Titanium dioxide (E171) Macrogols Triacetin.

Tablet coating (1mg): Hypromellose Titanium dioxide (E171) Macrogols Indigo Carmine Aluminium Lake (E132) Triacetin.
