Try Braggs tablets for Indigestion and Heartburn Relief

Charcoal derives its medicinal capabilities through its exceptional powers of absorption, and it is these absorption powers that give JL Bragg’s Medicinal Charcoal Tablets their digestive benefits. Activated charcoal is a highly effective natural adsorbent of gases and toxins in the medicinal treatment of indigestion, wind and heartburn.

One of the benefits of taking JL Bragg’s Medicinal Charcoal as opposed to other digestive products is that because it is not a drug, it has no direct action on any organ of the body. It does not enter the blood stream nor is the charcoal itself adsorbed into your body. All of it passes out of your system along with the toxins and gases it has collected on its journey.

How does it work?

Activated charcoal is a traditional remedy for treating excess stomach and intestinal gas.

It works by attracting excess gas in the stomach and bowels, which binds to the surface of the charcoal powder. This relieves the discomfort caused by excess gas (flatulence), wind, indigestion and heartburn. The charcoal is not absorbed from the gut.

Activated charcoal is also used in hospital emergency departments to treat poisoning. However, when used in this way, activated charcoal is given in much larger doses than those contained in this preparation. You should never attempt to treat poisoning yourself with this preparation. Cases of poisoning should always be taken directly to a hospital emergency department, where the most appropriate treatment can be administered.

What is it used for?

  • Excess gas in the stomach and intestines (flatulence)
  • Heartburn
  • Upset stomach characterised by stomach pain and burning, nausea and excess gas (dyspepsia)
  • Wind

Product History

John Longman Bragg founded JL Bragg Biscuit Makers in 1853 in London, England, with premises just off Oxford Street in the fashionable shopping district of Central London.

Harrods’ store records show JL Bragg’s Charcoal Biscuits and Charcoal Powder being sold in store from the late Nineteenth Century onwards, and the photograph on this page, taken in 1902, shows Charcoal Biscuits being advertised as a cure for indigestion.

As a result of increased commodity prices due to the onset of of the First World War, especially of sugar and eggs, JL Bragg introduced a new item to its range of Medicinal Charcoal products; Charcoal Tablets.

This was facilitated by a move to new premises which had the space and the machinery to mass produce JL Bragg’s Charcoal Tablets. The tablet pressing machine used at this time continued to be used until 1980, whilst the biscuit cutting machine was still used to produce biscuits until 1996!

In 1971, JL Bragg moved production operations to Ipswich, where it is now based, and the company has been producing at the current site since 1997.
