Bonefos Tablet 800mg contains the active ingredient sodium clodronate, which is a type of medicine called bisphosphonate and works by reducing the bone turnover in the body. As bone is not a static structure and can be continually reshaped, reformed and rebuilt it is vulnerable to excessive breakdown. This is particularly prominent in breast cancer that has spread into the bones and bone marrow cancer, which can lead to areas of bone weakness, pain and fractures. The ibandronic acid works by binding tightly to the bone tissue and prevents calcium from being removed and escaping into the blood in order to prevent the bone from breaking down further.
This means Bonefos can be used for managing bone complications (like bone pain, bone damage, or high blood calcium levels) in people with bone marrow cancer (multiple myeloma) or breast cancer that has spread to the bone. Also, as the ibandronic acid prevents calcium from being removed from the bone, it can relieve common symptoms of high blood calcium levels like nausea, tiredness and confusion.
