Betnesol Eye Ointment is specially formulated to treat eye inflammation. It contains an active ingredient called Betamethasone that is known as a corticosteroid (sometimes known simply as a steroid) that works to relieve irritation, redness and inflammation in the eye. They are normally prescribed by an eye specialist. It should be used for short-term treatment as symptoms should be relieved and cleared within a few days.

Directions for using Betnesol Eye Ointment:

  • First wash your hands.
  • Remove the cap from the tube.
  • Pull the lower lid of your eye downwards to form a pocket.
  • Hold the tube upside down near to your eye.
  • Squeeze the tube to release a thin line of ointment along the inside of your lower eye lid. Try not to touch your eye with the end of the tube as you do this.
  • Blink a few times to spread the ointment around the inside of your eye.
  • Repeat the process in your other eye if you have been told to use it in both eyes.
  • Replace the cap on the tube.

Caution before using Betnesol Eye Ointment:

To make sure this is the right treatment for you, before you start using betamethasone it is important that your doctor knows:

  • If you have ever had an allergic reaction to any eye drops or other medicine.
  • If you think you may have an eye infection.
  • If you wear soft contact lenses.
  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
  • If you are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, such as herbal and complementary medicines.

Possible side effects from using Betnesol Eye Ointment:

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. These usually improve as your body adjusts, but speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following side-effects continue or become troublesome.

Common side effects from Betnesol Eye Ointment include:

  • Mild irritation or stinging in the eye
  • Blurred vision

Both of these side effects are most likely not serious and should quickly pass and disappear within a few minutes. It these side effects worsen or do not go away, contact your doctor immediately.
