1. What is Aceclofenac and how does it work?
Aceclofenac belongs to a group of medicines called NSAID's. Aceclofenac works by blocking chemicals called prostaglandins; which are released at the site of an injury and are responsible for producing pain and inflammation following tissue damage and immune reactions. By preventing the synthesis of these chemicals Aceclofenac reduces inflammation and pain associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.
Each tablet contains 100mg of the active ingredient aceclofenac, and a number of inactive ingredients used to bind and coat the tablet (these are microcrystalline cellulose, sodium croscarmellose, polyvidone, glyceryl palmitostearate, and the film coat, containing partially substituted hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, polyoxyethylene 40 stearate and titanium dioxide).
2. Before taking Aceclofenac
Please inform your doctor immediately and DO NOT take Aceclofenac if you :
- have or have ever had a stomach or duodenal ulcer
- suffer from kidney disease
- had an allergic reaction, e.g. skin rash or wheezing to any of the ingredients of Aceclofenac or to any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent e.g. diclofenac or aspirin
- have ever experienced an increase in the severity and duration of an asthmatic attack, urticaria (rash), or acute rhinitis (runny nose) when taking aspirin or any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent
- are pregnant
Please inform your doctor if the answer to any of the following questions is yes or you are not sure about anything. Your doctor will decide if Aceclofenacfilm-coated tablets are suitable for you :
- have you ever experienced stomach discomfort, nausea, or heartburn after taking aspirin or other non–steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs?
- do you suffer from heart, or liver disease?
- do you suffer from asthma ?
- do you suffer from any blood disorders ?
- have you recently undergone major surgery ?
- are you trying to become pregnant ? Are you breast-feeding ?
- are you taking another form of NSAID ? Concomitant treatment with other NSAIDs may increase the frequency of side effects (more information on these is described later in the leaflet).
- are you taking anticoagulants (i.e. blood thinning tablets like warfarin), or diuretics such as furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide or triamterene ? Are you taking lithium, heart drugs, anti-diabetic drugs, methotrexate, steroids, cyclosporin or anti infectives such as quinolone antibiotics ?
- You should not take Aceclofenac for 8-12 days after taking mifepristone
Medicines such as Aceclofenacmay be associated with a small increased risk of heart attack (”myocardial infarction”) or stroke. Any risk is more likely with high doses and prolonged treatment.
Do not exceed the recommended dose or duration of treatment.
If you have heart problems, previous stroke or think that you might be at risk of these conditions (for example, if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol or are a smoker) you should discuss your treatment with your doctor or pharmacist.
As a precaution, you should refrain from driving or operating machinery if you feel dizzy or sleepy when you take Aceclofenac. Do not perform any of these actions until the effects wear off.
Always take Aceclofenac as directed by your doctor.
Aceclofenac is NOT recommended for use in children.
3. How to take Aceclofenac tablets
The tablets should be taken regularly and as directed by your doctor. The recommended dose in adults is 200mg per day, taken as one tablet in the morning and one in the evening.
Swallow tablets whole with a drink of water. Do not crush or chew the tablets. Aceclofenac should be taken preferably with or after food.
Never change the dose of your medicine without talking to your doctor first.
Continue to take your tablets for as long as your doctor recommends. Do not stop taking them if you begin to feel better, unless you are told to do so by your doctor.
If you miss a dose, do not worry, just take the next dose when it is due.
If you accidentally take too many Aceclofenac film-coated tablets, contact your doctor immediately or go to your nearest hospital casualty department. Take this leaflet or the box the Aceclofenac film-coated tablets came in, to the hospital so that they will know what you have taken.
4. After taking Aceclofenac
Like many medicines, Aceclofenac may cause unwanted side effects in some people and these can vary from patient to patient. STOP TAKING THE TABLETS AND TELL YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU GET ANY OF THE FOLLOWING: Stomach discomfort or heartburn; vomiting blood or passing black stools; feeling or being sick, or diarrhoea; flatulence or constipation; skin troubles such as rash or itching; yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes or dizziness; kidney or water problems; allergic reactions, swelling of the face or limbs; shortness of breath.
Medicines such as Aceclofenac may be associated with a small increased risk of heart attack, (”myocardial infarction”) or stroke.
Other side effects rarely reported include stomach ulcers, kidney or liver disorders, tremor, depression, insomnia, sleepiness or tiredness, drowsiness, abnormal dreams, hallucinations, headaches, confusion, vertigo, tingling or prickling sensation, inflammation round the mouth, blood disorders, palpitations, flushing, cramps, vision or taste disturbances, ringing in the ears, sensitivity to light and weight increase. If any side effect is severe or persists for more than a few days, tell your doctor. Also, if your tablets upset you in any other way, tell your doctor.
Whilst taking Aceclofenac, your doctor may want to give you a check-up from time to time. Consult your doctor before taking any new medicines whilst you are on Aceclofenac.
5. How to store Aceclofenac
As with all medicines, keep Aceclofenac out of the reach of chidren - a locked cupboard or medicine cabinet is often best. Do not store above 30°C.
If your doctor tells you to stop taking your medicine, you should return any remaining tablets to the pharmacist, unless the doctor tells you to keep them at home.

This medicine is for YOU. Only a doctor can prescribe it, so never offer it to any other person, even if their symptoms are similar to, or the same as yours.
