Simvastatin tablets are used to lower the total levels of cholesterol in your body. It reduced the ‘bad’ cholesterol (LDL cholesterol), and fatty substances called triglycerides in your blood. It also raises levels of ‘good’ cholesterol (HDL cholesterol).
While taking simvastatin medicine you should stick to a cholesterol-lowering diet. This medicine belongs to the class of drugs called statins and is used in conjunction with dieting for the following reasons:
Cholesterol is a fatty substance, also known as a lipid, which is vital for the normal functioning of the body. It is mainly produced by your liver, however it can also be found in some foods. If you have high levels of lipids in your bloodstream, also known as hyperlipidemia, it can lead to serious health complications.
If you have high levels of cholesterol it is crucial to lower them before developing a more serious health condition. In the first instance, you should look to maintain a balanced, healthy diet – keeping fatty foods to a minimum. Swapping foods which contain saturated fats for fruit, vegetables or wholegrain cereals. This will help prevent the return of high cholesterol. Increasing your amount of exercise and quitting smoking can also help to lower our cholesterol.
