Pravastatin tablets belong to a group of medicines known as statins. They work by preventing the liver from producing cholesterol which reduces its overall levels in your body. When there are excessive levels of cholesterol in the blood it can accumulate on the walls of blood vessels and block them.
Known as hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis, this condition may lead to:
When treating high cholesterol, Pravastatin is used to lower high levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol as well as raising the levels of ‘good’ cholesterol. Pravastatin tablets are taken when dietary changes have failed to make a difference to the cholesterol levels.
Cholesterol is a fatty substance, also known as a lipid, which is vital for the normal functioning of the body. It is mainly produced by your liver, however it can also be found in some foods. If you have high levels of lipids in your bloodstream, also known as hyperlipidemia, it can lead to serious health complications.
If you have high levels of cholesterol it is crucial to lower them before developing a more serious health condition. In the first instance, you should look to maintain a balanced, healthy diet – keeping fatty foods to a minimum. Swapping foods which contain saturated fats for fruit, vegetables or wholegrain cereals. This will help prevent the return of high cholesterol. Increasing your amount of exercise and quitting smoking can also help to lower our cholesterol.
