Cholesterol is a fatty substance, also known as a lipid, which is vital for the normal functioning of the body. It is mainly produced by your liver, however it can also be found in some foods. If you have high levels of lipids in your bloodstream, also known as hyperlipidemia, it can lead to serious health complications.
If you have high levels of cholesterol it is crucial to lower them before developing a more serious health condition. In the first instance, you should look to maintain a balanced, healthy diet – keeping fatty foods to a minimum. Swapping foods which contain saturated fats for fruit, vegetables or wholegrain cereals. This will help prevent the return of high cholesterol. Increasing your amount of exercise and quitting smoking can also help to lower our cholesterol.
