What is Calcitriol?

Calcitriol is used to treat established osteoporosis; the loss of bone mass which can result in brittle bones causing fractures to occur. Osteoporosis is associated with lack of oestrogen in postmenopausal women. Calcitriol can also be used to correct defective calcium metabolism, which results in weak bones, due to renal osteodystrophy caused by chronic renal failure, particularly in patients undergoing haemodialysis. Calcitriol capsules promote the absorption of calcium from the intestines and it also regulates bone remodelling (bone formation and resorption) and bone mineralisation, which helps reduce risk of fracture in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis and in renal osteodystrophy.
