Simvastatin is a drug used to treat high cholesterol levels. It is part of a group of drugs known as statins. Cholesterol is a type of fat which is a vital part of many of the bodies functions. It is located in all cells of your body and forms part of their outer layer. There are two main types of cholesterol:
- Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), which is also known as ?bad' cholesterol. High levels of LDL cholesterol can lead to atherosclerosis whereby fatty deposits build up on the walls of your arteries, thus reducing or blocking the flow of blood through your arteries, resulting in heart disease or stroke.
- High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is known as ?good' cholesterol as it transports excess cholesterol from your blood to your liver, where it is processed and removed from your body.
Your risk of heart disease and stroke is increased if you have high levels of LDL cholesterol and low levels of HDL cholesterol.
