Chlamydia or Chlamydia trachomatis is a sexually transmitted bacteria. In women the infection can spread to the womb, ovaries or the fallopian tubes and can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease which ultimately can lead to infertility. In men Chlamydia infects the urethra which is the tube through which urine is passed and in some cases can lead to infertility.

Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoea. Both men and women can be infected with the bacteria transmitted through vaginal or penile fluid of the infected. Gonorrhoea can infect the genitals, rectum and occasionally the throat or eyes.

What are the symptoms?

If symptoms do occur in men, they can include pain or burning on urination, a cloudy discharge from the tip of the penis or from the anus, or general pain and discomfort of the penis. In women symptoms can include vaginal or anal discharge, pain or burning when passing urine, vaginal bleeding in between periods, particularly after sex, and abdominal/pelvic pain or discomfort which can be exacerbated after sex.

Half of infected women and 1 in 10 infected men show no symptoms. Symptoms of Gonorrhoea include a thick green or yellow discharge from the penis or vagina. Women can experience pain on urinating and bleeding in between periods.

Getting tested for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea

You can get tested for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea by submitting a urine or swab sample. You can get tested for Gonorrhoea and a range of other STIs at your GP surgery, your local GUM clinic, or through Chemist Directs STI screening service.

This kit is suitable for testing for genital infections however if you suspect you have a Gonorrhoeal infection of the anus, throat or eyes you should contact your GP or GUM clinic as this kit cannot test for these.

Chemist Direct also offers a combination treatment which can treat both Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea, however the best treatment for Gonorrhoea is an injection of antibiotics which is we are unable to offer.
