Genital warts are fleshy growths found on the skin in the genital and anal area and are one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs). They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) virus and can be passed on via skin to skin contact such as during unprotected vaginal or anal sex.
How does Aldara work?
The active ingredient in Aldara Imiquimod, penetrates the wart and stimulates the body's immune system to attack the wart. Imiquimod binds to and stimulates immune cells to produce proteins called cytokines which are responsible for attacking cells infected with the virus.
Is Aldara suitable for me?
Aldara is suitable for most people with genital warts. Exceptions include the treatment of men with foreskin-associated warts, children, pregnant women and breastfeeding women.
How is Aldara used?
Aldara should be applied 3 times a week at night time and should remain on the skin for between 6-10 hours before being washed off. Treatment should continue until the warts have been visibly removed.
Aldara can be used for a maximum of 16 weeks but can successfully remove warts within 4 weeks. 50% of males who used Aldara find that it has successfully removed warts within 12 weeks, and 50% of women who used Aldara find it has successfully removed warts within 8 weeks.
Are there any side effects?
Like most medicines, Aldara can cause side effects in some people but these are not common. Possible side effects include headache, flu like symptoms and muscle weakness.
