About Diarrhoea

Diarrhoea is the passing of loose and more frequent stools than what you consider normal. Most people will occasionally experience diarrhoea in their lives and it can last a few days to a week which can be distressing and unpleasant, appearing to strike at any moment.

What causes diarrhoea?

Diarrhoea can have many different root-causes such as anxiety, food allergies, medicines or long term health conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome. However, diarrhoea is most commonly linked to gastroenteritis, a bowel infection which is common in both adults and children.

Gastroenteritis can be caused by:

  • A virus: such as the norovirus or rotavirus.
  • Bacteria: such as campylobacter and Escherichia coli (E. Coli) which can be picked up from contaminated foods.
  • A parasite: such as the parasite which causes giardiasis, which is spread by contaminated water.

What to do if you have diarrhoea

In most cases diarrhoea will clear up without treatment within a few days. However, if the symptoms persist it can lead to dehydration. You top priority is to make sure you drink lots of fluids and stay hydrated. It is crucially important to make sure small children are not dehydrated.

Staying at home for 48 hours after the last episode is also advisable if possible, as it may help to avoid spreading any potential infections.

With our Traveller's Diarrhoea Pack you can take a course of specially selected medicine to help stop your diarrhoea and reduce any of the additional symptoms associated with it.
