About Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence is the inability to achieve and or maintain an erection that is satisfactory for sex. 1 in 5 men over 30 are affected by erectile dysfunction, and the older you are the more likely you are to experience erection problems During arousal nerve signals are sent from the brain to the penis and blood flow increase allowing the penis to enlarge and harden. If there’s a problem with any part of this process, it may become more difficult to maintain or achieve an erection.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

The reason you have erectile dysfunction may be physical or psychological

Physical causes may include:

  • Hormonal imbalances – reduced levels of hormones such as testosterone can contribute to ED.
  • Issues affecting the nervous system can reduce nerve transmission to the penis.
  • Reduced blood flow to the penis – the blood vessels which supply the penis can narrow with age.
  • This problem can be made worse for men with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetics, and smokers.
  • Drinking too much alcohol is known to be a factor in ED.
  • Structural issues with the penis such as Peyronie’s disease can lead to erectile dysfunction.
  • Medicines such as antidepressants, treatments for high blood pressure or antihistamines can cause ED as a side effect.

Psychological causes may include:

  • Relationship problems
  • Performance related anxiety
  • Depression
  • Stress

What can you do?

We strongly recommend visiting your GP to review all possible factors contributing to your condition. This may involve physical examinations and tests for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and testosterone. Improvements to your lifestyle can often help improve ED. These include losing weight if you are overweight, exercise, stopping smoking, reducing alcohol intake, and reducing stress.
