Ringworm Treatment

Ringworm is not caused by worms, but is a common fungal infection. You can usually treat ringworm with over-the-counter medicine to make it go away. The antifungal medicine is used every day, usually for about 2 weeks. It's important to finish the whole course, even if your symptoms go away.

What causes ringworm?

Ringworm is caused by a fungal infection and can be uncomfortable. The main symptom of ringworm is a red or silver rash. The rash may be scaly, dry, swollen or itchy.

Where does ringworm appear on the body?

Ringworm can appear anywhere on the body, including the scalp (tinea capitis) and the groin (jock itch). The rash is usually ring-shaped, unless it's on your face, neck or scalp. Ringworm on the face or scalp may also cause patchy hair loss.

How do you treat ringworm?

We recommend using an antifungal medicine. This might be a cream, gel or spray depending on where the rash is.
