Malarone (atovaquone 250mg) (proguanil 100mg) tablets have 2 uses. They are used to effectively prevent malaria as well as helping to treat it if infected.
Malaria is caused by the Plasmodium parasite which can be contracted through the bites of a mosquito. Typically the symptoms of malaria will manifest between 7 to 18 days of being bitten, depending on the specific parasite you’re infected with.
Sufferers are typically bitten dusk and dawn. The initial symptoms of malaria are flu-like and can be mild, making it difficult to diagnose.
Some forms of malaria occur in a 48-hour cycle, during which you feel cold at first with shivering. This then develops into a fever accompanied by severe sweating and fatigue which can last between 6 and 12 hours.

There are different types of malaria. The most serious is caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite which can lead to quickly developing life-threatening complications such as breathing problems and even organ failure.

Take Malarone with food or a milky drink, where possible. It is best to take Malarone at the same time each day.

Possible Side Effects from taking Malarone Tablets:
Dizziness has been reported. Patients should be warned that if affected they should not drive, operate machinery or take part in activities where this may put themselves or others at risk.
The active ingredients are:
250 mg of atovaquone and 100 mg of proguanil hydrochloride in each tablet.
The other ingredients are:
tablet core: poloxamer 188, microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, povidone K30, sodium starch glycollate (Type A), magnesium stearate.
tablet coating: hypromellose, titanium dioxide (E171), iron oxide red (E172), macrogol 400 and polyethylene glycol 8000.
