The flea life cycle

The flea life cycle needs to be broken – fast. You need to act quickly at the first sign of fleas to avoid infestation, which starts with just 2 fleas laying hundreds of eggs in a matter of days. Fleas don’t waste any time when infesting your pet and invading your home, which is why killing the cycle, needs to be quick! The flea life cycle comprises of 4 stages:

  • Flea egg – a female flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day, which would be around 2000 eggs in their lifetime.
  • Flea larvae – the larvae move away from light into dark areas like carpets or cracks of flooring.
  • Flea pupae – flea larvae spin themselves into a cocoon where they start to fully develop.
  • Adult flea – new adult fleas live in their protective cocoon waiting to latch onto your pet.

Killing adult fleas alone isn’t enough. Just because they are the only visible fleas, killing them will not stop the flea cycle and you will soon notice more when the other eggs begin to grow into more adults and by then even more eggs will have been laid. That is why Frontline not only kills adults, but also the eggs, larvae and pupae to ensure the entire flea cycle is wiped out in order to keep your pet and your home protected.

Yearly cycle:

You will notice certain times of the year where your pet may be more vulnerable to catching fleas, however infestations are possible all year round.

  • Spring – as the weather warms up, fleas and ticks will breed even quicker.
  • Summer – your pet is most at risk through the hot summer months. Temperature and humidity can lead to big infestations and don’t forget this is the time when your pet will be spending a lot of their time exploring outdoors.
  • Autumn – this is the most important time of year to protect your home against re-infestation, especially as the central heating is on and the house is considered to be a warm hiding place.
  • Winter – it might be cold outside, but your house is a nice, warm breeding ground. Even if your pet isn’t outside as much, protecting your home is just as important.
