Anaphylactic shock is when the body experiences an extreme and potentially life threatening reaction to an allergen. It can happen in reaction to insect bites or stings, food, drugs or exercise.
The reaction happens when the body tries to protect itself from an allergen by releasing chemicals into the bloodstream. The symptoms that signal the onset of an anaphylactic shock occur within minutes of exposure and include:
Itching of the skin, raised rash (like a nettle rash), flushing, swelling of the lips, throat, tongue, hands and feet, wheezing, hoarseness, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and in some cases a loss of consciousness.
The adrenalin in the EpiPen Jr. works by very quickly making blood vessels smaller, relaxing muscles in the lungs to help improve breathing, reducing any swelling and stimulating the heartbeat. It works on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems and is meant for self-administration in times of crisis.
This treatment can be obtained through our Online Doctor service. Simply add to basket and head to the checkout to begin your consultation.

EpiPen Jr. contains:
sodium metabisulphite (E223), which may rarely cause severe allergic reactions (hypersensitivity) or breathing difficulty (bronchospasm). However, you should still use the EpiPen ® Jr. as there are no satisfactory alternatives. This medicine contains less than 23 mg sodium per dose, i.e. essentially ‘sodium-free’.
