Calcipotriol is used for Plaque psoriasis (psoriasis vulgaris). Psoriasis is the result of excessive skin cell production. It produces raised plaques on the skin which can feel scaly and thicker than normal skin. Calcipotriol reduces the excess skin production and promotes healthy and normal skin growth. It helps to clear, and flatten the psoriasis plaques on the skin. The medicine will work over time with maximum improvement seen with up to 12 weeks of treatment. It comes in both a cream and ointment and your recommended dose will be stated to you by your doctor.

Before you start this treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet from inside your pack. The leaflet will give you more information about applying calcipotriol, and a full list of possible side-effects from using it.

Your doctor will tell you how often to use calcipotriol it is usually applied once or twice each day. If you have been told to use it twice a day, use it in the morning and in the evening.

Wash your hands well after using any calcipotriol preparation. This will help to prevent it getting on to any areas of your skin which are unaffected by psoriasis.

You should start to see an improvement in your skin within two weeks of using calcipotriol, and this improvement should continue for up to eight weeks. Continue to apply it regularly for as long as you have been recommended in order to get the full benefit.

  • Do not apply this medicine to the face.
  • This medicine is for external use on the affected area(s) of skin only.
  • Wash your hands after applying this medicine, unless your hands are the area being treated.
  • The maximum recommended dose of this medicine varies according to age and is stated in the information leaflet supplied with the medicine. Do not exceed the dose recommended by your doctor. Excessive widespread use can lead to a rise in the calcium levels in the body.
  • It is recommended that you avoid or at least limit your exposure to sunlight and sunlamps while you are using this medicine, because it could make your skin more sensitive to UV light.
