The NHS unveiled their new Long Term Plan on 7 January, with a commitment to tackle major killer conditions, including heart attack and stroke.
The NHS Long Term Plan will focus on early detection and prevention of heart conditions. Genetic testing will be available for people with dangerously high cholesterol, reaching around 30,000 people. This testing will allow for detection of heart and circulatory diseases much earlier, helping death rates to fall. Better care for those living with heart failure will improve quality of life for many patients.
Cutting edge technology, including scans and potential artificial intelligence, will help the NHS to deliver the best stroke care in Europe, with over 100,000 more people getting access to new and improved services.
The new plan from the NHS also sees the first guarantee that investment into mental health will grow faster than the overall NHS budget. A £4.5million service model will bring health bodies together with local government to deliver essential services. With this investment, 345,000 more young people and children will benefit from expanded community or school based mental health services. By 2023/24 investment in mental health will have reached at least £2.3 billion a year.
Technology is a common theme of the new plan, with a digital ‘front door’ planned to help patients get better access to health care, and new equipment, such as Smart Inhalers meaning conditions can be tracked from wherever a patient is.
In line with the plan and its focus on early detection, you can invest in some clever tech of your own, with our range of Healthcare Equipment, which includes blood pressure monitors, breast screening devices and self-tests for allergies. Take your prescriptions into the digital age too and order repeat prescriptions from Pharmacy2U.
