Side effects

Before taking Atovaquone proguanil ask your doctor for information about side effects. While most people do not experience any side effects from taking the drug, some of the more common side effects of Atovaquone proguanil include:

  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Weakness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dizziness

Serious side effects and allergic reactions

If any of these side effects persist you should inform your doctor or pharmacist right away. While medications are prescribed because their benefits are greater than their side effects, you should tell your doctor immediately if serious side effects occur. Some of the rarer, but more serious, side effects of taking Atovaquone proguanil include:

  • Persistent and severe nausea and vomiting
  • Unexplained tiredness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Darkened urine
  • Yellowing eyes and skin
  • Signs of anaemia such as worsening tiredness, rapid breathing, pale lips and skin or nails, and rapid heartbeats while resting
  • Signs of severe infection like high fever, severe chills, sore throat, and body aches
  • Rash
  • Itching and swelling of the face, tongue, and throat
  • Severe dizziness
  • Difficulty breathing

Very serious allergic reactions to this drug are rare, but you should seek out immediate medical attention if you notice any of these symptoms.
