Amlodipine contains the active ingredient amlodipine which belongs to a group of medicines called calcium antagonists. Amlodipine is used to treat hypertension, also known as high blood pressure or a certain type of chest pain called angina, a rare form of which is Prinzmetalís or variant angina.
In patients with high blood pressure Amlodipine works by relaxing the blood vessels, thus allowing blood to pass through more easily. In patients with angina, Amlodipine works by improving blood supply to the heart which then receives more oxygen and as a result chest pain is prevented. Your medicine does not provide immediate relief of chest pain from angina.
High blood pressure, or hypertension rarely has any noticeable symptoms but if it is left untreated it can increase your risk of suffering a kidney disease, a stroke, dementia, a heart attack or failure. High blood pressure affects 1 in 4 adults in England yet over 5 million people are estimated to be unaware they have it.
