What is Vitamin C & Rosehip?
Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid and is a water-soluble vitamin that has a number of biological functions.
- It is required for growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body.
- It is necessary to form collagen, an important protein used to make skin, scar tissue, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels.
- Vitamin C is essential for the healing of wounds, and for the repair and maintenance of cartilage, bones, and teeth.
Why take Vitamin C & Rosehip?
Rosehip is well known to have a high Vitamin C content level, and may have even more than citrus fruits. It is widely used by people to gain their Vitamin C intake. Vitamin C is one of many antioxidants. Antioxidants are nutrients that block some of the damage caused by free radicals, which are by-products that result when our bodies transform food into energy.
The build up of these free radical by-products over time is largely responsible for the ageing process and can contribute to the development of various health conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and a host of inflammatory conditions like arthritis. Antioxidants also help reduce the damage to the body caused by toxic chemicals and pollutants such as cigarette smoke.
The body does not manufacture vitamin C on its own, nor does it store it. It is therefore important to include plenty of vitamin C containing foods in your daily diet.

Daily Mail: Rosehips 'protect the joints from arthritis'
A herbal medicine made from rosehips may regenerate joints in people crippled by arthritis, say scientists. Studies show it can protect the cartilage cells which facilitate joint movement. Researchers claim the rosehips - one of nature's richest sources of vitamin C - also improve activity levels by damping down an over-active immune system.
Researchers from the department of human nutrition and health in Basle, Switzerland, measured the effects of different doses on human cartilage cells. They found Rosehips switched off genes responsible for producing proteins and enzymes which have been implicated in inflammatory joint destruction. It also switched on genes that help produce collagen and cartilage, essential components of a healthy joint.
The findings were announced at the Osteoarthritis Research Society's International World Congress in Rome. One in two people of 50 and over suffers from osteoarthritis, particularly in the knees.

BBC News: Rose-hip 'remedy' for arthritis
Rose-hips could offer a cheap and effective way of treating debilitating rheumatoid arthritis, research from Germany and Denmark has suggested. Seventy-four sufferers, mostly females, took part in the six-month trial.
Just under half took the rose-hip remedy while the others took a placebo. Both groups continued to take their usual medication. Activity among the first group improved by 20-25%, according to results presented at the annual Eular meeting. The number of joints causing pain or discomfort fell by 40%, but did not change for those treated with the dummy.
"I think we were all surprised to see such meaningful results," said Professor Stefan Willich from the Charite University Medical Centre in Berlin, who conducted the German arm of the study. "Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the most difficult conditions I'm aware of. It's a tough disease, which makes it all the more remarkable to find such beneficial effects from this remedy."
