About OptiBac Probiotics
OptiBac Probiotics
OptiBac Probiotics, formerly DTECTA Probiotics, is a brand of probiotics which offers today’s consumers natural health solutions to support their demanding lifestyles. We work with specific probiotic strains and select combinations of strains that have been well researched and documented in their quality, safety and particular efficacies. Each OptiBac Probiotic formulation contains different, well researched types (or strains) of friendly bacteria that convey particular health benefits.

OptiBac Probiotics food supplement helps maintain overall digestive health, comfort and immunity throughout the gut. We believe in helping people to obtain healthy, fulfilling lives by helping them take charge of their well-being and by offering them a natural choice in managing their health.

 What are probiotics?
Probiotics, often referred to as ‘good’ or ‘friendly bacteria’, are microorganisms that are beneficial to the human body.

The body is naturally host to both good bacteria (probiotics) and bad bacteria (pathogens). Having a good balance of probiotics over pathogens is key to maintaining a healthy digestive system, immune system and good energy levels.

What are prebiotics?

Prebiotics are the food source for probiotics.  Whereas fast sugars such as glucose feed the bad bacteria in the body, prebiotics are complex carbohydrates which selectively feed the body’s good bacteria, allowing them to grow and multiply.  This growth is known as a ‘bifidogenic’ effect.

Who can benefit from taking probiotics?

Research continues to show that a vast amount of health issues; ranging from bad breath, acne or eczema, to more obvious digestive worries such as indigestion or constipation; can be caused by an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the gut.  There is therefore an enormous amount of people who could potentially benefit from supplementing their probiotic levels.

How to take probiotics?

There has been much hype on the topic of probiotics, and in many cases certain probiotic products (such as yoghurt drinks) have become quite trendy.  However, the majority of these drinks have very high sugar content, if not resorting to artificial sweeteners and furthermore many nutritionists doubt their efficacy.

For these reasons, we would generally recommend a reliable probiotic supplement in the form of a sachet or capsule.

Things to look out for in choosing your probiotic:

At least 2 or 3 billion live microorganisms per daily dose, guaranteed at the time of consumption, not just the time of manufacture. (Probiotics are delicate, and will naturally deplete as they sit on the shelf, hence you need to find out how many you will be ingesting when you take it, and not how many it had when it was made.)

A combination of various strains, for example from both the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria genera. (Different strains will naturally reside in and look after different areas of your gut)

Most people will benefit from both probiotics and prebiotics, to not only supplement your good bacteria in the short term, but to keep it multiplying inside the body.

Ideally, you want to choose the right types, or strains, of probiotic for your specific health conditions.

Specific strains for specific conditions
Different types, or strains, of good bacteria can have different effects on the body. That’s why it is important to take the right probiotic for your needs… here is an overview of how some of the more well-known probiotic strains work:

Lactobacillus acidophilus is probably the most well known species of probiotic.  Naturally residing in the small intestine, acidophilus is well documented for its use in preventing Candida overgrowth, reducing the risk of traveller’s tummy, and in softening the harsh symptoms of conditions such as IBS.

Bifidobacterium infantis is well known for its benefits in children’s gastrointestinal health and general immunity.  It can also be given to adults however, and shows much potential in boosting resistance to flus and colds.  Infantis has been clinically tested to hinder the adhesion of pathogenic strains of E. Coli in the gut.

Saccharomyces boulardii is a unique, internationally renowned probiotic yeast which has undergone years of rigorous scientific research and trials.  S. boulardii has been found to bind to harmful bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella, and to flush them out of the body; naturally working against diarrhoea.  Recent research has also started to demonstrate its anti-fungal properties, reducing Candida levels in the body, or treating symptoms such as Athlete’s foot.  S. boulardii can be taken on a regular basis by people with such conditions, or by those with IBS and a tendency towards diarrhoea, as well as sufferers of IBD.
