Hayfever & The Treatments Available
by Katie Lincoln on February 25, 2011 (read all posts by Katie Lincoln)

The start of spring can spell misery for the 12 million Britons who suffer from seasonal allergic rhinitis better known as hay fever, but there are treatments available to ease your suffering and help you enjoy the summer allergy free.

What Causes Hayfever?

Hayfever is an allergic reaction to certain types of airborne pollen. Grass pollen is the most common culprit (affecting 95 per cent of sufferers) and the season can start in May and last until July or August. People who are allergic to tree pollen can start feeling the effects as early as February, depending on whether the allergy is to early or late flowering trees. For those allergic to nettles or other weeds the season is likely to be late summer – August and September.

What Are The Symptoms?

Common complaints are runny, itchy or blocked nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes. Frequent absences from work or poor performance in exams are often the result. Allergic reactions can start when you are a teenager (13 to 14-year-olds are particularly affected) but the body can learn to adapt, so as you grow older the symptoms may ease.

How To Treat Hayfever

Treatments for hayfever fall roughly into two main types - systemic treatments that are taken by mouth and which act on the whole body; local treatments that are applied directly to the affected area and which act just in the area where applied. The type of treatment chosen should depend on the severity and type of symptoms.

Treatment For Sore/Itchy Eyes

If your hayfever is mild and affects the eyes only, then eye drops containing drugs known as mast cell stabilisers, antihistamines or decongestants will help reduce redness and watering.

Treatment For A Blocked/Runny Nose

If the nose is blocked or runny, nose drops or nasal sprays containing antihistamines, mast cell stabilisers or decongestants may be applied to bring relief. There are also nasal sprays containing the topical steroids beclometasone, betamethasone, budesonide, flunisolide, fluticasone, mometasone and triamcinolone that help reduce the allergic response and which can be taken before an attack of hayfever begins to reduce the severity of the attack or to prevent it all together.

Treatment For The Nose, Eyes & Chest

If hayfever symptoms are more widespread, for example, affecting nose, eyes and chest then antihistamines such as acrivastine, cetirizine, loratadine, chlorphenamine and promethazine can be taken by mouth in the form of tablets, capsules or syrups.

When To See A Doctor

If your symptoms are having a serious effect on your day-to-day activities, consult your doctor. Also if you are experiencing chesty symptoms such as wheeziness you should see your doctor to make sure that you do not have asthma or that your asthma is not getting worse.

Living With Hayfever

If you suffer from hay fever, try not to let it rule your life. Some simple things will help put you in control and reduce the impact that the symptoms have on your life.

1. Avoiding or minimising contact with pollen is one of the best things to do to try to reduce the risk of hay fever. Try to discover what is causing your hay fever. Keep a record of where and when you suffered an attack of hay fever. This will allow you to plan ahead, perhaps by taking avoiding action or by using medicines such as nasal steroids to reduce attacks.

2. In the summer months, newspapers and weather forecasts carry predictions of the pollen count. If the pollen forecast is high, staying in doors with the windows closed will help. Similarly, if in the car, keep the windows closed and, if fitted, use the air conditioner. Many modern cars now have a filter on the car’s cooling system that helps trap pollen and spores in the air.

3. Wearing sun glasses helps reduce exposure of the eyes to pollen and reduces the glare of the sun that can add to any irritation of the eyes. Avoid walking in parks and fields, take holidays at the sea side where pollen counts are lower.

4. Try to reduce the urge to sneeze, blow your nose or rub your eyes. While this may not be as easy as it sounds, if you can resist the temptation it helps reduce the irritation and inflammation to these areas that can make your hay fever symptoms worse.

5. If you do need a treatment to control symptoms, select one that suits your life style. Many of the hay fever remedies contain the older anti-histamines such as chlorphenamine and promethazine that can make you feel drowsy, interfering with your ability to work or to study. If you find that this happens, change to a preparation containing one of the newer antihistamines such as acrivastine, cetirizine and loratadine that are much less likely to make you drowsy.

6. If you are not satisfied with a particular hay fever remedy because you still experience some symptoms, it is no longer as effective as it used to be, or it has side effects, try switching to a product that has a different type of active ingredient, or from one type of formulation to another. There are many types of products available, it’s just a matter of finding which one suits you best.

Greasy Hair? Help is at Hand!
by Catherine Russell on February 24, 2011 (read all posts by Catherine Russell)

Greasy hair is a common problem for many people these days. And there are many contributing factors for this. One is merely because your sebaceous glands, the glands that produce the nourishing natural oils needed for healthy hair, are too active and are simply producing more oil than you actually need. Hormonal factors can also influence sebum production, during puberty, that time of the month etc. There’s not a lot you can do about this, but there are external factors that can make it worse, such as a poor diet high in fatty foods. Perspiration, environmental dirt and bacteria can all contribute, too. Here are a few quick and easy tips for you to achieve that healthy, vibrant finish.

Cut down on junk food! Not only is bad for your health, it is also bad for your skin, nails and hair. Keep it as an occasional treat, and watch as your nails, hair and skin all transform within a matter of weeks. The skin appears clear, hair more shiny, and nails strengthened. What's not to love?!

Make sure you wash your hair more frequently to help remove the excess oils, sweat and bacteria that can make it appear worse. Try to use shampoos with citrus extracts, as these tend to be great for oily hair as they have a slightly astringent effect without over drying. Klorane Citrus Pulp Shampoo is fantastic. Combined with provitamin B5 and a gentle cleansing base of acid PH, this shampoo is a genuine concentration of energy. It gives new life and extreme shine to dull hair, regardless of the hardness of the water. Researchers at the Klorane Laboratories have scientifically proven the double activity of Klorane citron extract which through its high vitamin P, amino acids and carbohydrate content gives energy and shine to hair. From the very first application, hair feels light and the scalp feels refreshed and healthy.

When washing the hair, avoid scrubbing or massaging the lather into the scalp as this will stimulate the already over-active sebaceous glands. These will then produce more oil. Instead, rub gently over the hair, then rinse and repeat to ensure you have got a thorough clean.

Avoid conditioners! They will only leave hair looking greasy and feeling heavy. Instead, condition with a light weight conditioning cream once every fortnight, and only apply from half way down the hair to the tips. Always avoid applying to the roots!

Use freshly squeezed lemon juice for an astringent effect. After shampooing, run a decent amount of lemon juice through the hair, allow to penetrate the hair and then rinse away. Lemon acts as a natural astringent and will help to revitalise the hair and scalp, while lifting away excess oil and impurities for refreshed hair. Lemon also helps to add a beautiful, healthy shine for hair with vitality.

Lemon slices

Greasy hair and no time to shampoo? Try a dry shampoo to instantly revive the hair and absorb excess oils while adding a soft, pleasant fragrance to mimic that just stepped out of the shower feeling. Batiste have a fantastic range, including Tropical scented, Golden Shimmer or even for Coloured Hair. Simply apply to the roots when your in a rush, and you're good to go!

A fab tip for when you really are caught short, and don’t have dry shampoo to hand either, it talcum powder! It works exactly the same way a dry shampoo, by absorbing excess oils leaving hair looking fresh and clean. Apply a small amount at the roots and massage into the hair gently until the white colour has disappeared. Johnson's Baby Powder is the original and most popula talcum powder by far! And as it's so affordable, you can afford to use this as a simple, hassel free dry shampoo every day if you please!
