How does ElderMax™ work?
Free radicals are oxygen molecules that possess incompatible pairs of electrons. The lack of compatible electrons cause free radicals to travel around the body creating mayhem as they try and steal electrons from other molecules. Antioxidants are molecules stable enough to give an electron to a free radical and thus neutralise it.
An overabundance of free radicals within the body damages cells, causing them to age and degenerate (otherwise known as oxidative stress). Antioxidants slow down the rate of oxidative stress and stabilise free radical molecules that could otherwise cause serious health implications.
ElderMax™ contains Elderberry extract, Vitamin C and Zinc, all of which are which extremely powerful antioxidants that minimise cell damage and strengthen the body’s immunity by stabilising the free radicals, thus helping to reduce damage to the body that could potentially cause illness and disease.
Elderberries are a rich source of nutrients and active compounds that benefit the immune system. Anthocyanins, rich phytochemicals called flavonoids, are what gives the elderberries their dark colour, and are powerful antioxidants that protect against free-radical damage and oxidation.
These anthocyanins are located in the purple pigment of black elderberries. Scientific research has shown that the anthocyanins in black elderberry can increase the production of cytokines, the proteins that act as messengers within the immune system, and in doing so, serve to improve the body’s immune response.
ElderMax™ contains extracts of black elderberry making ElderMax™ is a rich source of anthocyanins which have been shown to help maintain the body’s immune system.
Key Ingredients
Elderberry
The Elderberry tree is a deciduous one that can grow to about thirteen feet in height. It yields large oval shaped leaves and large, creamy white heads of small, sweet-smelling flowers. The flowers are then followed by purplish-blue berries in the autumn. The Elderberry tree is native to Europe, Asia, North Africa and the Eastern United States.
Some parts of the elderberry are toxic, such as the leaves and unripe fruit. But the common species has flowers and mature berries that may be ingested without harm.
The common species is black elderberry plant and also known as Sambucusnigra. The dark pigmentation of the fruit it bears contains high levels of the flavonoid group of antioxidants called Anthocyanins. It is these antioxidants that provide the elderberry with its purple pigment. The fruit of the black elderberry possesses powerful antioxidant capabilities.
Elderberries themselves are seen as super-foods as they contain extremely high levels of vitamins, antioxidants and phytochemicals, and are beneficial for viral infections, allergies and inflammatory conditions.
Herbalists have used elderberry extract and other elderberry parts for centuries to treat illnesses, especially those relating to feverish colds, flu and excessive phlegm. Native Americans also used elderberry to reduce fevers and soothe rheumatism. One historical use of elderberry was to reduce excessive phlegm and congestion. Herbalists have long used elderberry extract and tea to help soothe and shrink swollen mucus membranes, relieve nasal congestion and ward off infections that may lead to bronchitis and sinusitis. Hence their use as a cold & flu remedy to date.
Vitamin C & Zinc
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that has a number of biological functions. It is required for growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body. It is necessary to form collagen, an important protein used to make skin, scar tissue, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. Vitamin C is essential for the healing of wounds, and for the repair and maintenance of cartilage, bones, and teeth.
Vitamin C is one of many antioxidants. Antioxidants are nutrients that block some of the damage caused by free radicals, which are by-products that result when our bodies transform food into energy.
The build-up of these by-products over time is largely responsible for the ageing process and can contribute to the development of various health conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and a host of inflammatory conditions like arthritis. Antioxidants also help reduce the damage to the body caused by toxic chemicals and pollutants such as cigarette smoke.
The body does not manufacture vitamin C on its own, nor does it store it. It is therefore important to include plenty of vitamin C-containing foods in your daily diet.
Zinc is an essential mineral that is a component of more than 300 enzymes needed to repair wounds, maintain fertility in adults and growth in children, synthesize protein, help cells reproduce, preserve vision, boost immunity, and protect against free radicals, among other functions.
Is ElderMax™ right for me?
Elderberry has been scientifically tested to work synergistically with Vitamin C in order to help boost immunity towards cold & flu. Zinc has been shown to do the same with Vitamin C. Therefore, these three nutrients together may help to fight off the symptoms of flu more effectively than any other combination.
Clinical studies
A small study conducted in 2004 published results that showed 93% of flu patients given elderberry extract were completely symptom-free within two days and those taking a placebo recovered in about six days. Lead researcher Erling Thom, with the University of Oslo in Norway suggests this study demonstrates that elderberry extract works for type A flu.
60 patients who had been suffering with flu symptoms for 48 hours or less; 90% were infected with the A strain of the virus, 10% were infected with type B, took part in the study. Half the group took 15ml of elderberry extract and the other group took a placebo four times a day for five days.
Patients in the extract group had "pronounced improvements" in flu symptoms after three days: nearly 90% of patients had complete cure within two to three days. Also, the extract group had no drowsiness – a downside of many flu treatments. The placebo group didn't recover until at least day six. They also took more painkillers and nasal sprays.
Erling Thom states "It's likely that antioxidants called flavonoids —contained in the extract—stimulate the immune system... Also, other compounds in elderberry, called anthocyanins , have an anti-inflammatory effect; this could explain the effect on aches, pains, and fever".
Thom adds: Elderberry extract could be an "efficient and safe treatment" for flu symptoms in otherwise healthy people and for those with compromised immune systems, such as the elderly.
Researchers from Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School in Israel concur with these findings.
In a clinical trial published in "The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine" in 1995, Barak et al studied the effects of elderberry extract on humans suffering from the flu.
Results showed elderberry extract had a substantial effect on the improvement of symptoms, helping patients recover up to four days faster than those who did not take elderberry extract.
When recovering, the flu patients who were treated with elderberry extract also showed higher levels of antibodies in their bloodstream than those flu patients who did not receive elderberry extract treatment.
Results were beneficial for infections of both influenza A and influenza B and suggest that taking elderberry may help your immune system and protect you against multiple strains of the flu.
According to a 2001 study led by Vivian Barak from the Department of Oncology at Hadassah University Hospital and published in "European Cytokine Network" elderberry may benefit the immune system.
The study, conducted on patients who collectively were suffering from 10 different strains of the flu virus, found that elderberry increases the production of chemical messengers that signal the brain to initiate an immune system response. Barak believes this capability could also prove useful for treating immuno-suppressive disorders such as AIDS or cancer, in conjunction with other therapies.
Elderberry might therefore be beneficial to the immune system activation and in the inflammatory process in healthy individuals or in patients with various diseases.

Elderberries 'may combat bird flu'
Health Article: Daily Mail 2006
An extract from black elderberries could be used to combat the bird flu virus, new research has suggested.
A study looked at whether the food supplement containing black elderberry could combat the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu when added to canine cells in laboratory tests.
It found that the elderberry-based product was at least 99 per cent effective at reducing the virus in the cells.
But experts warned that many more studies were needed to find out whether the formula was effective in combating H5N1 in humans.
The virulent H5N1 strain of avian flu has already killed more than 80 people, mainly in Asia, after they contracted it from close contact with birds.
But there are fears that the virus could mutate into a form that is easily passed from human to human, leading to a flu pandemic which could potentially kill millions worldwide.
The main medical solutions in case of a pandemic include a vaccine, but this could take up to six months to develop once the strain emerges.
'Stockpiling antivirals'
Countries around the world are stockpiling antiviral drugs which can reduce the length and severity of flu symptoms.
The latest study by Retroscreen, which is affiliated to the University of London, looked at how effective the elderberry extract was in combating H5N1 infections in dog kidney cells.
The formula was added to the infected cells and compared with samples which were just allowed to incubate the virus.
The researchers found that black elderberry was effective in significantly neutralising the virus infections in the cell cultures.
Dr Madeleine Mumcuoglu, who developed the formula using the secret ingredient from elderberries, said that studies also showed that black elderberry could combat the ordinary winter flu. "The flu virus cannot replicate by itself. It must do so inside a living cell.
"It binds to cells via hemagglutin on the virus surface. Black elderberry blocks the hemagglutin and prevents the entry of the virus into cells," she said.
Which herb will treat your cold?
Health Article: Daily Mail 2006
To feel full of vitality your body needs to be in a state of balance. When its systems are over or under-stimulated, your health will suffer. Thankfully, your amazing body has been designed with an immune system that usually enables it to heal itself.
But sometimes this capacity is diminished, especially when the root cause of an illness is relentless – when the body suffers endless stress or a poor diet, or is overexposed to toxins.
Colds and flu
A cold is a viral infection in the upper respiratory tract caused by one of 120 viruses known as rhinoviruses. Influenza is also a virus and has similar symptoms, often more severe.
The treatment programme:
Cold symptoms include a headache, sore throat, cough, running or blocked nose, sinus pain and tiredness. Flu usually has all of these symptoms and also eye ache, glandular swelling and melancholy. It is important to treat the virus but also vital to strengthen the immune system against the infection.
Essential supplements:
• Vitamin C: Helps improve immunity by increasing the production of the virus-inhibitor interferon, as well as other immune cells.
• Zinc: The antiviral and antioxidant is crucial for the function of immune cells.
Bacterial and viral infections
Bacteria and viruses surround us. A healthy immune system is generally able to fight off these pathogens, but many factors (including stress, overwork and toxicity), coupled with a poor diet high in sugars and additives and low in nutrients, compromise immunity, making us susceptible to illness
Recommended herbs:
Elderberry (Sambucus nigra): Contain antiviron, which reduces viral symptoms, and antioxidant flavonoids to speed recovery.
