Foot Odour

Healthy feet are important as they support the entire weight of our bodies. For this reason, feet contain approximately 250,000 sweat glands that constantly secrete moisture to keep them moist, supple and healthy. However feet are prone to excessive sweating, which can lead to foot odour. This issue can become a persistent one and that can easily become embarrassing and bothersome.

Causes

Today's footwear is a primary cause of sweaty feet. Shoes and socks that are manufactured from man-made materials lead to excessive perspiration which increases the build up of bacteria that can result in sweaty, smelly feet and may lead to Athletes Foot.

Unfortunately Sweaty feet can also be triggered by stress, both physical and emotional, all of which seem to be an inevitable feature of everyday life. Pressure placed upon the foot due to strain or fatigue is a common cause, as is emotional distress and turmoil. Even a change in the weather can be enough to initiate excessive sweating.

Prevention & treatment

A hygiene routine is generally the best method of prevention. Both shoes and socks should allow feet to breathe and therefore shoes should preferably be spacious and made of leather. Socks should be made from wool, cotton or a mixture of the two, as these materials are absorbent and will help keep feet dry.  There are also a number of over-the-counter medications for this particular problem that come in the forms of powders, lotions, creams such as flexitol foot de-odour, and anti-perspirants such as Odor-Eaters, Scholl Odour Control & Fresh step as well as Carnation Foot spray.
